I'm on the road but can't avoid posting on the conviction of six scientists and a government functionary in Italy on criminal charges, with substantial prison sentences handed down, for statements made about earthquake risks not long before a moderate earthquake toppled buildings and killed 308 people in L'Aquila in 2009.
A question that I posted when the trial began still holds:
In the days following the earthquake, all fingers were pointed at lax building codes and the possibility of local corruption. How many inspectors or builders or officials who approved inadequate building codes were prosecuted? (Please post links if you find them!)
My recommendation for further reading on the case now is the same as it was last year:
There are many subtle undercurrents in the case that can't be adequately summarized here but are beautifully laid out by Stephen S. Hall of Nature in a long feature that is essential reading if you care about the tough intersection of uncertain science and risk management in disaster hot spots.
On the science, and the challenges of risk communication, please read this excellent article by Henry Fountain*: "Trial Over Earthquake in Italy Puts Focus on Probability and Panic."
Please also read the links that Roger Pielke, Jr., has assembled in a valuable post clarifying what the trial was, and was not, about.
