Your report about declines in childhood obesity ("Obesity in Young Is Seen as Falling in Several Cities," front page, Dec. 11) was welcome news.

Reducing childhood obesity and its associated diseases requires sustained effort across an entire community food system. Parents play critical roles in tackling obesity, as schools do. We must ensure that everyone has access to healthy, affordable food. Policies that include safe opportunities for outdoor activities are also important.

Obesity is declining in Philadelphia because of a network of people dedicated to helping vulnerable children and families. Common Market connects regional farms with schools, hospitals and grocers.

Philadelphia Food and Fitness Alliance advocates block by block for healthier food and safer places to play. Fair Food Philly doubles the value of food-stamp purchases at farmstands.

As efforts to address the whole food system start adding up, rates of childhood diseases will surely come down.
