Re "Robots and Robber Barons" (column, Dec. 10): I appreciated Paul Krugman's discussion of how income from capital has been growing at the expense of income from labor. It put me in mind of this comment by Abraham Lincoln:
"Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."
In the 21st century, the United States has taken Lincoln's dictum and turned it on its head. We need political leaders who are brave enough to say that this has to change — brave enough to take labor's side as bluntly as Lincoln did.
