"Big Decision on Afghanistan" (editorial, Dec. 17) calls for the swift and decisive withdrawal of United States troops from Afghanistan. Unanswered is what will happen to ordinary Afghans if the United States withdraws precipitously.

For 11 years, the United States has pursued its national security interests in Afghanistan: hunting Osama bin Laden, stamping out a Qaeda sanctuary, fighting against the return of the Taliban.

During this period, warlords have become rich on American cash, human rights abuses have not been prosecuted, corruption has flourished, and American bombs have killed large numbers of Afghan civilians.

If American troops were simply to pack up and leave, it would leave civilians vulnerable to the Taliban and create a vacuum that will be filled by predatory warlords and local commanders.

American efforts to promote human rights in Afghanistan have fallen short, but important progress has been made, particularly with respect to women and girls. The Afghan people desperately need continuing American and international support to ensure that their security and human rights are not forgotten in the rush to the exit.
