Re "Dole Appears, but G.O.P. Rejects a Disabilities Treaty" (news article, Dec. 5):
Enacted in 1990, the Americans With Disabilities Act is a beacon of equal protection under the law for people with physical and mental disabilities around the world. On Tuesday, the Senate rejected an opportunity to cement America's global leadership on equal access for the disabled when it failed to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities, which mirrors the provisions of the disabilities law.
The Senate may revisit the treaty when it reconvenes in 2013. Every new Congress opens by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Will its members make good on their pledge to liberty and justice for all?
