Re "N.R.A. Calls for Armed Guards in Schools to Deter Violence" (nytimes.com, Dec. 21): In its response to the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., the National Rifle Association has demonstrated again that it is blind to truths that are obvious to most Americans. We all know that the best way to end gun violence is to limit or prohibit gun ownership. We all know that troubled people like Adam Lanza would be relatively harmless but for the ease with which they acquire guns.
But Wayne LaPierre, the N.R.A.'s executive vice president, wants America, and especially America's schools, to fight fire with even more fire. Saying "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," he demanded "a plan of absolute protection" that included armed guards in every school in America.
Such a plan would only invite more tragedies.

To the Editor:
The National Rifle Association continues to take untenable positions. Suggesting placing armed guards in schools is just another way to sell more guns, not to keep children safe.
What message are we sending children by having them greeted by armed guards when they arrive at their school doors?
Guns will frighten children when we should be doing everything in our power to help children feel safe and secure in their schools.

Re "National Rifle (Selling) Association" (editorial, Dec. 21):
It's time to reveal who the National Rifle Association is, that shadowy power that has successfully bought out Congress in the interest of the gun industrial complex.
Where are the names and faces of its leadership, beyond Wayne LaPierre, and its stable of big-money supporters?
Until the public has the opportunity to puncture the organization's anonymity, voters will continue to take in its gun-promoting propaganda.
