Re "Quinn Presents Vision for Improving New York City Schools" (news article, Jan. 16):

You report that Christine C. Quinn, the City Council speaker, wants New York to imitate a Cincinnati program that has established medical clinics in schools.

The idea of community schools isn't new to New York. The Children's Aid Society has been operating community schools in the city for decades. They bring together schools, health care providers, nonprofits, governments and other partners to overcome the challenges that can stand in the way of learning, especially for those students living in poverty.

These schools feature early childhood centers, health clinics, after-school and summer camps and parent education. Indeed, our National Center for Community Schools has helped districts around the world learn from our model.

The difference is that Cincinnati has created the infrastructure to scale the model districtwide. With luck, in this instance, New York can follow Cincinnati's lead.
