To the Editor:

Your Jan. 3 editorial "Another Attempt to Deny Japan's History" — about a plan to modify Japan's apologies for using women as sex slaves in World War II — brought to mind the English-language booklet I found in my room at the Hotel Okura Tokyo in 1975. In about 24 pages, it offered a chronological overview of Japanese history.

The penultimate chapter ended with the worldwide stock market crash of 1929. The final chapter opened with the phrase, "After the military adventures of the 1930s and 1940s," and then moved ahead into the accomplishments of the 1950s and beyond.
