To the Editor:
Re "Suffering Fools Gladly," by David Brooks (column, Jan. 4):
There is no excuse for condescension or abuse of someone judged less intelligent, even if your name is Steve Jobs or Pauline Kael. By excusing certain people, we seem to be invoking the opposite principle: suffering geniuses gladly.
There is another expression, "out of the mouths of babes," which implies an utterance of wisdom from someone not expected to have it. "Babes" suggests only the young, but we often apply this phrase to anyone who surprises us with wisdom.
Good parents and teachers are quick to recognize wisdom from unexpected sources, because they are always looking for it. If you look for wisdom instead of stupidity, you will find it. That is a secret that the misanthropic intelligentsia would do well to learn.
