Re "So Many Snapshots, So Few Voices Saved" (Sunday Observer, Dec. 30): Let's hear it for Verlyn Klinkenborg. I, too, had vocal surgery and was silenced for weeks. It was scary. I'm an advice columnist and a talker, and I'd never heard of otolaryngology, yet suddenly specialists were asking what my voice used to sound like. I felt grimly grateful that at least they could call my answering machine.
Mr. Klinkenborg and I both got lucky. To preserve memories in the new year, don't just take snapshots. Press "record."

To the Editor:
After reading Verlyn Klinkenborg's column, I thought "Oh, how I would love to hear my father singing again," as he did every day when I was growing up. He died in 1961 at 54, and the only place I can still hear his voice is in my thoughts.
We should heed the advice of this essay and record the voices of everyone we love, not wait until tomorrow.
