"Malnourished Gain Lifesaver in Antibiotics" (front page, Jan. 31) focuses much-needed attention on an exciting breakthrough in the treatment of acute severe malnutrition in the developing world.
If research confirms that a seven-day course of antibiotics can save thousands of children every year, it will be a game changer in the way international aid organizations confront malnutrition.
The challenge will be ours in the aid community to acquire and provide enough pediatric antibiotics to ensure a steady supply for hospitals and therapeutic feeding centers treating the most severely malnourished children.
AmeriCares has supported a therapeutic feeding center in Malawi since 2003.
We will continue to monitor research on the topic to inform our medical aid deliveries not only to Malawi but also to Guatemala, Haiti and other low-income countries where malnutrition is rampant — and often fatal — for young children.
