To the Editor:

"Stop the Honking? New York Suggests It's a Lost Cause" (news article, Jan. 29) is very disturbing, but I have used one method in the past to cut down on some horn blowing.

If I am in a cab and the driver blows his horn unnecessarily — and I define "unnecessarily" as blowing the horn out of pique rather than warning someone of danger — I politely request that the driver not blow his horn unnecessarily. If he does it again, I tell him that if he blows his horn unnecessarily again, he'll blow his tip. It works.
