We agree with your Feb. 5 editorial encouraging President Obama to enact a forceful labor agenda in his second term ("More Jobs, Higher Pay"). The president should not only advocate an increase in the minimum wage, but also make sure that home-care workers are finally covered by wage and overtime protections and that all workers gain access to paid family and medical leave.
The Family and Medical Leave Act marked its 20th anniversary this month; it has been used more than 100 million times by workers over two decades, but doesn't go far enough. The act allows workers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for a personal or family illness, or childbirth. Today, 62 percent of families have either both parents working or a single parent who works, and most cannot afford to take a leave without pay. The administration and the public need to stand up for good-quality jobs and to make sure that all workers can make ends meet and take care of their families.
