To the Editor:

It was both refreshing and terrifying to read the March 19 Op-Ed essay "Paul Ryan's Ax Isn't Sharp Enough," by Representative Paul C. Broun Jr., a Republican from Georgia.

It was terrifying that Mr. Broun seemed almost to take glee in his proposals to abolish federal departments like the Department of Education and to totally change programs like Medicare, with little to say about how people who depend on these valuable programs would be affected. It was refreshing, however, in the sense that Mr. Broun laid his agenda bare, whereas other G.O.P. politicians cloak their radical small-government agenda.

We can all agree to tame the deficit, but it must be done sensibly over time, without hurting the most vulnerable members of society. In proposals like this to cut spending, the G.O.P. often comes across as callous.
