To the Editor:

We take strong issue with Joe Nocera's characterization of New York City's Rapid Repairs Program in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in the Rockaways ("Rebuilding on Their Own," column, Feb. 26). Contrary to what he states in the column, the program has delivered thousands of new boilers with very few issues, and it has restored critical services to more than 19,000 residential units in some 11,400 buildings.

Thousands of contractors have worked seven days a week to achieve these results, which FEMA calls one of the most successful home recovery programs ever.

The city, state and federal governments have delivered more resources more quickly than ever in response to Hurricane Sandy, and while we have a long way to go, we will continue to stand with all those affected by the storm and do everything we can to restore and rebuild communities as quickly as possible.
