Re "A New Order, From Inexpensive and Online ... to Free and Online" (Continuing Education special section, March 19):
Regarding the future of "profit-making degree-granting schools," the criticism of the University of Phoenix by Chris Peterson, a researcher for the M.I.T. Center for Civic Media, ignores the fact that the university's innovative online classes started in 1989, when we embodied the very definition of early tech adopters.
Innovation does not stagnate. The university's online learning platforms are widely recognized to be among the most advanced and sophisticated. So it's not surprising that others seek to emulate our model. Mr. Peterson's criticism also highlights one of our greatest strengths: that we serve populations refused admission by schools with exclusionary admission practices.
Education is too important to leave it to the few at the expense of those who need and value it most.
