To the Editor:

Re "Long Border, Endless Struggle" (front page, March 3):

In general, I consider myself to be a rule follower. So, when I'm playing by the rules and someone cuts in front of me or cheats to get an advantage, I find that to be unfair and unjust.

There are people all over the world following our immigration laws, waiting in a virtual line to become citizens of the United States. Depending on individual circumstances, they might have to wait in line for years.

When we're talking comprehensive immigration reform, whom do we want to reward? The ones who consciously and intentionally played by the rules or the ones who consciously and intentionally broke them?

Although there are many factors involved in such reforms, one thing should be clear. We need to ensure that the system remains fair and just. Making reforms that don't meet that standard — and are obviously to gain political advantage — should not be tolerated.
