To the Editor:

Re "Truck Kills Boy, 6, as He Walks to School" (news article, March 1):

Amar Diarrassouba's death is a tragedy for everyone involved. Traffic calming efforts, like the national Safe Routes to School program, can help prevent these kinds of injuries.

Our recent research indicates that in the past decade, school-age pedestrian injuries during school-travel hours decreased over 40 percent in New York City public schools that received Safe Routes engineering interventions, compared with no change in other schools. The Department of Transportation authorization bill passed last year, MAP-21, eliminated dedicated funding for Safe Routes to School.

Continuing and expanding Safe Routes to School may substantially reduce the occurrence of similar tragedies in the future.
