Re "Posters on Teenage Pregnancy Draw Fire" (news article, March 7):
There is substantial research showing the negative outcomes of teenage pregnancy: teenage parents and their children face a lifetime of economic, health and educational challenges. With more than 21,000 New York City teenagers becoming pregnant each year, it is estimated that taxpayers pay more than $21,000 a year for each child born to a teenage mother.
We applaud the city's efforts to raise awareness of this problem. But years of experience teach us that shame-based messaging is ineffective in discouraging young people from sexual risk-taking.
Instead, let's focus on the proven, evidence-based solutions for the teenage pregnancy epidemic in our city. These programs integrate age-appropriate sex education with access to medical, mental health, academic support, financial literacy and career planning services.
Adults don't prevent teenage pregnancy; young people do. Armed with the right knowledge and tools, they will see their own value and nurture a desire for a successful and productive life.
