Re "Anthony Lewis, 1927-2013: Reporter Brought Law to Life, Elevating Supreme Court News" (front page, March 26):
I was first drawn to The New York Times through the writing of Russell Baker, Tom Wicker and Anthony Lewis. In my mind, they alone compared to the likes of Ruth, Gehrig and DiMaggio in defining their profession and setting a high bar for playing their game.
Mr. Wicker and Mr. Lewis are now gone, and to think that neither will write another word leaves me with an empty feeling. Each analyzed and wrote of the issues of the day with profound and exacting pens.
Mr. Lewis would have been a brilliant lawyer or judge, but perhaps best served the law through his regular column in The Times and his books. In his hands, the law was a powerful force for good, and at the same time, he placed its meaning in our hands for consideration and execution in our daily lives.
While he will be sorely missed, he leaves behind a body of work that I hope we will not forget in thinking about today's issues and those to come.

Not only was Anthony Lewis a valuable commentator regarding the Supreme Court, but he was also a particularly influential figure in the anti-Vietnam War movement.
As a college student in the late 1960s and early '70s, I used to cut out his twice-weekly columns, and they formed the basis of numerous discussions that we had on campus.
As I look back on those columns 40-plus years later, they remain remarkable for their prescience, accuracy and persuasiveness. He was and remains a hero to many of us.
