Sebastião Salgado, one of the world's most admired photojournalists, has spent a lifetime relentlessly training his eye on human degradation and suffering. His photographs, though beautiful, are often full of despair. Mr. Salgado's new work, "Genesis," is a testament to something altogether different: the joy, innocence and repose in earth's Edenic corners.
Mr. Salgado has sought out the beginnings of time, visiting 32 countries — remote, seemingly inhospitable places cherished by people who live in an ancient, intricate balance with nature.
These photographs are serene, even stately: still points in time. Meditating on the devastation we have inflicted on our world, Mr. Salgado said he set out with the feeling that "our very existence on this planet is in danger." The shadow of perilous climate change falls quietly across the images. But "this project restored my soul."
"Genesis" honors its biblical antecedent. Mr. Salgado bears witness to "every thing that He had made, and behold, it was very good." This is the paradise from which we are falling. There could be no more powerful reminder of all that we stand to lose. DOMINIQUE BROWNING
