Joe Nocera ("Why Rutgers Blinked," column, April 6) calls the incident involving Coach Mike Rice "a telling symbol of what is wrong generally with big-time college sports." The real problem is that universities should be in the business of education, not mass entertainment.

University administrators should inspire and manage educational institutions, not mass entertainment businesses. "Student athletes" should not receive far more resources and attention than regular students who pay tuition.

Universities should not cut back and outsource their educational capabilities while expanding athletic programs.

American universities are losing touch with their mission. If their mission is providing mass entertainment for alumni, students and TV audiences, then they should continue reducing their faculties and switching to online courses in anticipation of joining the N.F.L. and the N.B.A. instead of just serving as farm teams.
