To the Editor:

Re "U.S. Justice Dept. Releases Judge's Ruling on Salvadoran General" (news article, April 12):

The Ford family shares a bond of blood with the Salvadoran people.

In 1980, my sister-in-law, Ita Ford, a Maryknoll missionary, was raped and murdered with her fellow missionaries Maura Clarke, Jean Donovan and Dorothy Kazel. Gen. Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova, one of those responsible for these heinous crimes, has been living securely in the United States since 1989.

Judge James Grim's historic decision, enumerating the number of crimes committed under General Vides Casanova's command and ordering his immediate deportation, sends a clear message that evildoers may not find a safe haven in the United States.
