Re "Criticism of Cuomo Over Plight of Cities Raises Syracuse Mayor's Profile" (news article, April 2):

Mayor Stephanie A. Miner of Syracuse is the real goods, a fierce defender of her city who speaks truth to power. I have followed her career since 2009, when I began work on a book about school reform in Syracuse that will be published in November.

She not only was just about the first politician in town to embrace the whole-district reform that a group called Say Yes to Education proposed, but also won support and financing from other city leaders. Ms. Miner saw school improvement as a kind of last best hope for Syracuse. I quote her in the book as saying to me:

"The most important mission of the city and of the country is making sure that as a democracy we have an informed citizenry to go into the job market and that we have an economy where they can put those skills to work. ... When you have a system that fails, people lose hope and this is pernicious."

Whether it is reviving the public schools or keeping her city from simply "kicking the can down the road," as she puts it, when it comes to finances, Stephanie Miner is willing to take on tough issues.
