Re "New Guidelines Call for Broad Changes in Science Education" (news article, April 10):
A former classmate and friend from medical school used to tell me how his religious conviction could be used to explain scientific evidence, even evolution. But he agreed that religion could not be used to refute science.
Where the two were at odds, he would say we must have got the religious message wrong when we wrote it down. A fabulous compromise for us imperfect humans, I thought.
Religious believers who claim that there is evidence against settled science willfully ignore the scientific method, which takes all evidence into account before coming to a conclusion. There is always evidence against scientific theories, but for settled arguments like global warming or evolution, the evidence is overwhelming, and the two sides of the debate are simply not equal.
A curriculum that stresses the scientific method is a good start to helping the religious align their beliefs with scientific facts.
