In regard to your news article about FreshDirect's move to the Bronx and the company's relationship with the environmental activist Majora Carter ("Hero of the Bronx Is Now Accused of Betraying It," front page, April 5), I believe that those critics of Ms. Carter are misguided and misinformed, and are trying to malign a respected national leader to further their own agenda.
I encouraged FreshDirect and Majora Carter to work together because she knows how to build the bridges that bring progress to the Bronx. This is exactly the kind of project that Ms. Carter has always worked for, and will bring a community-oriented company and thousands of jobs to our borough.
FreshDirect has already expanded its service across the Bronx, committed to local hiring and a green delivery fleet, and begun a pilot program to accept electronic benefit transfer cards.
These are major victories for the Bronx that cannot be ignored. Ms. Carter's support of FreshDirect does not blemish her record; it only enhances it.
