Re "School Vote Stirs Debate on Girls as Leaders" (news article, April 12):
As the head of a girls' school who must frequently argue the benefits of single-gender education, I was not surprised by your article. Obviously, one of the advantages of an all-girls school is that every leadership position is held by a girl. As a result, every student in the school sees role models of female leadership every day.
Moreover, girls at all-girls schools graduate with the expectation that women will be leaders. They are fully aware of the reality and the predominance of male leadership, but they are armed with the tools to "push in," in the words of one student quoted in the article, because they have had so much leadership experience.
All-girls schools are intentional about creating the characteristics that girls will need to be leaders in a world that doubts the value of female leadership: courage, confidence, grit and humor. They will expect and demand recognition of their leadership wherever they may be.
