Painful as reading "The President's Budget" (editorial, April 11) was, it included some important realities that have caused me to feel betrayed by a president who has, figuratively speaking, thrown his core supporters under the bus. You write, "He wanted to show that he was willing to antagonize his supporters to get a budget compromise, putting Republicans on the spot to do the same."
But you should recognize that this is not a compromise but a capitulation to the most rabid right-wingers who now occupy the House of Representatives. A compromise with those bent on sending middle-class retirees into poverty, those who have paid into the system all their working lives to have a secure retirement, must not be discarded as an inconvenience to keep taxes as low as possible for the wealthiest among us.
What is desperately needed here and now is another Franklin D. Roosevelt, a president who, when faced with the most reactionary forces of his day, famously proclaimed "I welcome their hatred." President Obama is not that man.

To the Editor:
Re "Obama Budget Whittles Democratic Party Pillars" (front page, April 11): I voted for a president who would look out for the elderly, and now he is going back on his word, in order to compromise with Republicans.
As a college student, I am fearful of what eligibility for Social Security and Medicare will be like when I get old. I am disappointed at how after politicians get in office, they change their minds and do what they please.
President Obama's promise to the elderly is now void. So much for politicians in Washington.
