To the Editor:

Re "Ditch the King. Hire an Actor" (Op-Ed, April 29):

We will always have a soft spot for Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, who abdicated in favor of her son on Tuesday (news article, May 1). About 30 years ago, we were on the faculty at Lehman College and the CUNY Graduate Center, working with a linguistics Ph.D. student from the Netherlands. The student, named Adrian, had to return home in the summer to meet student visa regulations, which required completion of various forms.

To our surprise, Adrian showed up in September with his forms signed by Queen Beatrix. He explained that the queen kept regular office hours and was available by appointment to any Dutch citizen.

A queen who keeps office hours — now that's a monarchy we can support.
