Re "In Secret, Court Vastly Broadens Powers of N.S.A." (front page, July 7):
I read the George Orwell classic "1984" when I was in college, 60 years ago. Much of what was written in the novel was prescient.
Nevertheless, the fact that Edward Snowden could inform the public about the government spying on ordinary Americans and that you could write about it in The New York Times reassures me that our democracy continues to be safe and strong.
