To the Editor:

As a criminal defense attorney, I am grateful to Wilbert Rideau for his harrowing account of solitary confinement ("When Prisoners Protest," Op-Ed, July 17). With walls as his only companions, Mr. Rideau had to fight to keep himself sane for days, then months, then years.

Research shows that extreme isolation can have effects similar to those of torture. The United States prison system now holds an estimated 80,000 men and women in solitary confinement. The vast majority of these prisoners are not a threat to themselves or others; many are mentally ill. None of them deserve the relentless cruelty of solitary confinement.
