Re "Creativity, Not Just Catch-Up, at Retooled Summer Schools" (front page, July 1):

There is no question that in these times of testing literacy and mathematics, the neglected academic subjects — art, music and history — should be given due attention during summer school. But once again we are missing an opportunity to correct the teaching of one of those subjects that we just love to test: mathematics.

Summer school would be an excellent time to expose students to some of the wonders of mathematics that lie outside prescribed curriculums and show off the beauty and power of mathematics.

For example, it might be interesting to demonstrate how great artists and musicians (like Leonardo and Wagner) used mathematical principles in their work. This would make teaching the prescribed mathematics curriculum far more attractive and more effective.

Doing this might also keep future generations from bemoaning how mathematics has no place in the real world and encourage a lifetime appreciation of mathematics.
