Re "Killing of Islamists Deepens Crisis in Egypt" (front page, July 9):
The "mild" response of the United States to the Egyptian security forces' mass murder of pro-Morsi protesters and its "conspicuous" failure to condemn the military overthrow of a legitimate, democratically elected president raise serious questions about the commitment of the Obama administration to democracy and the rule of law.
The hypocritical attitude of the United States government can only harden the convictions of those around the world who believe that the United States is conducting a global war against Islam, while rallying new recruits to their cause and generating further acts of violence against American citizens and institutions around the world. This shortsighted policy will have disastrous long-term consequences.

Re "Assistance to Continue for Now, U.S. Says" (news article, July 9):
The Obama administration has made a huge policy error by choosing to continue aid to Egypt, which is in the throes of military repression.
The administration's refusal to call it a coup would be hilarious if the implications weren't so serious. This sends the wrong signal about the United States and its double standards on global democracy.
Clearly, there is something amiss, and history will judge the administration harshly.
