Not mentioned in the July 11 Summer Shorelines series article "Chasing Waves in Pursuit of Freedom," about the Jetty Jumpers of the New York waterways, is the peril that these speed demons on Jet Skis present to people in kayaks.
"They say they are never scared on the water," the article says. They may not be, but a person out for a gentle, quiet — and slow — way to experience the beauty of the open water must be constantly vigilant for power craft hurtling through the waves.
What these gentlemen need, I think, is a little less testosterone and a little more awareness that the freedom they find takes away the freedom others are seeking.
