"Let's Not Braise the Planet," by Mark Bittman (column, July 2), makes an essential point: we humans must aggressively phase out our promiscuous use of fossil fuels. A way to do this that is gaining bipartisan support is a steadily increasing, revenue-neutral carbon tax.
Sellers of fossil fuels would pay a fee based on the carbon content of the fuel, and 100 percent of the revenue would be returned to households. The fee would start low and increase over time.
The hand of the market would lead the way to greater energy efficiency. Renewables would become steadily more competitive. Carbon dioxide emissions would fall.
Because it would be revenue-neutral, this would not be a tax in the traditional sense. It would be a price on the head of carbon dioxide, the world's worst pollutant.
