Re "What It Takes to Make New College Graduates Employable" (Shortcuts column, Business Day, June 29):
The preparation of college graduates for the diverse demands of the work force has been a concern of the academic community for some time now. This is particularly true in institutions that train students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
At Stevens Institute of Technology, where I am provost, we have found that one of the most effective approaches is cooperative education with professional employers. Our co-op program attracts 40 percent of our undergraduates and provides the students with real-world work experience coupled with a structured academic support environment to enhance the skills that bridge their extensive technical skills with real-life application.
For the past 26 years, our co-op program has been a prime factor in our students' employability upon graduation; 86 percent of the class of 2013 who participated in the program received job offers before graduation. And by taking advantage of college advisers as teachers for the workplace, employers invest less time teaching the basics while they gain access to more job-ready graduates.
