"A Religious Legacy, With Its Leftward Tilt, Is Reconsidered" (Arts pages, July 24) pits evangelical and mainline Protestant Christians against one another in a zero-sum game of intellect versus emotion. You further refer to the evangelist Billy Graham as merely a firebrand polemicist caught in a readership battle between Christian publications.
Notably missing is Mr. Graham's role as a bridge-builder between liberal and evangelical denominations through a captivating faith that integrates head and heart.
Mainline institutions often invited Mr. Graham to address their constituents; the Protestant Council of the City of New York sponsored his historic 1957 Madison Square Garden crusade. Mr. Graham always strove to emphasize that disagreements among Christians over particular doctrines were inferior to their common beliefs and burdens.
Mr. Graham mobilized liberal and conservative Christians alike toward evangelism. As the theologian Grant Wacker said, "Assessing Graham's legacy for his own evangelical subculture may be less important than assessing his legacy for the mainline."
