"Shirking Responsibility in the Gulf," by Stephen Teague (Op-Ed, July 31), paints an incomplete picture of BP's efforts to help economic restoration efforts in the Gulf.
Since the Deepwater Horizon accident, BP has paid more than $11 billion in claims to more than 300,000 claimants. Since 2011, we have also funded a consortium of legal services nonprofits in four Gulf states to help low-income people navigate the claims process.
In fact, according to its own press materials, the organization Mr. Teague works for, the Mississippi Center for Justice, leads that legal aid consortium. It has received more than $4 million in BP funding so far.
We also object to his characterization of BP's efforts to temporarily pause payments by the Court Supervised Settlement Program. Recent allegations of misconduct were concerning enough for the judge overseeing the settlement to appoint a former F.B.I. director, Louis Freeh, to investigate. No company would willingly bear the risk of continuing to pay awards potentially tainted by misconduct.
Mr. Teague says there are "robust" mechanisms in place to detect fraudulent claims, but the settlement program appears to be spending substantially less on fraud detection efforts than the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, its predecessor run by Kenneth Feinberg. This is despite the fact that it has been reported that Mr. Feinberg had referred around 4,000 cases of potential fraud to law enforcement authorities.
Our record demonstrates that we are meeting our commitment to Gulf restoration efforts.
