"Despite West's Efforts, Afghan Youths Cling to Traditional Ways" (front page, Aug. 1) suggested that despite our recent advances, my countrymen have adopted only a veneer of progress. Do not judge Afghans by what they say but rather by what they do. We apply the same philosophy to our programming.
Afghans are quick to criticize our soap operas and reality TV, but they never miss a show. Death threats and fatwas rail against women as radio hosts, singers and reporters, and yet more than half the population still tunes in to watch them.
A chauvinistic remark by a 20-something in knockoff designer jeans and spiked hair about where his "sister or wife belongs" does not belie a real shift in attitudes toward women. Public opinion may lag behind the trailblazers in public life, just as it did during the civil rights movement in the United States. But a revolution in thinking is under way, and won't end as international support ebbs.
