Anjli Parrin ("The Dog-Eat-Dog World of Model U.N.," Education Life, Aug. 4) provided an interesting glimpse into the way Model United Nations conferences, or MUNs, are evolving.
The possibility that non-U.N. role play can lead to important lessons learned was evident in the remarks of Rodolfo Diaz, Harvard's head delegate at the Philadelphia conference, who concluded that a strategy based on building consensus is better than one that uses aggression. Traditional Model U.N.'s should strive to achieve the same message.
A new approach to doing traditional Model U.N. simulations, led by the United Nations itself, is also under way. Through our interactions with Model U.N. conferences around the world, we have learned that most traditional Model U.N.'s do not mirror the way the United Nations actually functions.
Model U.N. simulations often provide the first serious introduction for young people to the United Nations. Therefore, in an effort to educate Model U.N. organizers about the differences, we have started the "U.N. Guide for MUN."
