"Gays in Russia Find No Haven, Despite Support From the West" (front page, Aug. 12) portrays a pattern of systematic harassment and persecution of Russia's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population that is unlikely to change anytime soon. So the United States should do for that population what we did for Soviet Jews and other persecuted groups in the 1970s: enact legislation aimed at easing their emigration to the United States.
Thanks to that legislation, the Jackson-Vanik amendment to a 1974 trade bill, many smart, creative people have prospered as model immigrants in this country. Russia's persecuted gays deserve the same chance.

To the Editor:
Boycott the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi to protest how gay people are being treated in Russia, as some people are suggesting? No way. Those marching in the opening-day ceremonies should make the boldest of all statements by displaying the colors of the rainbow on their attire.
Let their silence speak for that country's persecuted. And then let President Vladimir V. Putin just try to arrest each and every Olympic athlete.
