To the Editor:
Re "Catching Up With France on Day Care," by Pamela Druckerman (Sunday Review, Sept. 1):
Why do we have such a hard time in this country simply stating that it is morally right to assure that all of our children are well cared for? Isn't it for the greater good to have our babies and young children cared for in a clean, safe, encouraging environment?
What sort of society places children in such precarious situations and expects parents to work but doesn't help them at all with the cost of out-of-home care?
I would suggest that Scandinavia and the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education (based on the principles of respect, responsibility and community) are the best models, and they don't spend a lot of time claiming that they have all the answers to brain theory. They just do what is right.
