To the Editor:

"As Obama Pauses Action, Putin Takes Center Stage" (front page, Sept. 12) suggests that the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin, has deftly put President Obama in a box. But if our own president plays his cards right, it could turn out the other way around.

Rather than allowing the discussion over how to deprive Syria of chemical weapons to become mired in details concerning verification, Mr. Obama needs simply to turn that problem entirely over to the Russians.

Mr. Putin has offered to take the lead. Fine. We should let him do it, knowing that if, after he undertakes that task, his friend Bashar al-Assad ever miscalculates so seriously as to again use chemical weapons, it will be Mr. Putin rather than Mr. Obama who is held responsible for failing to prevent this further atrocity.
