Re "Big Dreams, but Little Consensus, for a New Detroit" (news article, Sept. 3):
Detroit has a history of producing dreamers who have transformed both the city and American society. No less is needed now as Detroit seeks to renew and rebuild in a sustainable manner.
The challenges are great, but there are recent urban examples that may be worth emulating. One such example is in inner-city Boston, where a public-private-university medical school group transformed a vacant industrial park into a thriving biotech cluster. This development also includes a biomedical education and training program that has sent local residents into careers in this industry over the last 25 years.
This is but one example ranging from cities like Los Angeles, New Orleans and elsewhere that can encourage Detroit's dreamers to dream big while at the same time redeveloping the city on a smaller footprint.
