To the Editor:
Re "EpiPens for All" (Sunday Review, Sept. 8):
I applaud Curtis Sittenfeld for describing the angst and uncertainty of those who care for people with food (and bee sting) allergies.
As a pediatrician, at this time of year I am faced with endless sets of forms for the use of EpiPens and emergency protocols required by schools. Certainly, there is clearly a need for documentation of the known allergies of students. But all school personnel must be educated to address the signs of anaphylaxis immediately and the potential for it.
The thought that they would go searching for authorization amid a pile of forms before trying to save a life gives me hives. What grave lesson are they teaching to the other students looking on?
