TO THE EDITOR:

The arts in America are as much under threat as our political institutions and may, perhaps, be seen as a measure of the failure of the American Experiment.

Minnesota, Michigan and New York City, the principal seat of the arts in our country, are all experiencing the dismantling of major players in our country's cultural life. Shouldn't we be as concerned about their demise as we are about the current economic and political turmoil receiving overwhelming coverage in the news media?

We are taught "Ars Longa, Vita Brevis." That famous aphorism will be turned on its head by public ambivalence regarding the fate of these critical cultural institutions.
