To the Editor:
The current crisis in Washington demonstrates again the problems that may arise when two or more unrelated pieces of legislation are allowed to be voted on in Congress together as a package. In a truly democratic process, every proposal should be passed or rejected on its own merits.
Banning this onerous practice would have the added benefit of putting a crimp on pork spending and make it impossible for special interests to sneak their agenda through Congress without its members realizing what they are voting for.
