Re "Chronicling Violence, and Now a Victim" (news article, Sept. 24):
As you reported, on the evening of Sept. 21, Prabhjot Singh was brutally beaten amid jeers of "Osama" and "terrorist." Dr. Singh, a Sikh who is profoundly committed to improving the health of poor and underserved communities locally and globally, was honored last year by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with its inaugural Young Leader Award, given to 10 people aged 40 and under for exceptional contributions to improving the health of the nation.
I am writing on behalf of his co-honorees, who were appalled to hear that our friend and colleague was the victim of this unconscionable act of violence, but inspired and humbled by his resolve in maintaining the Sikh tradition of disciplined optimism.
In solidarity, we hope that this incident provokes reflection and action to prevent hate crimes of any kind. The nation's health and future depend on a diverse, informed and tolerant citizenry, and a commitment to social justice.
