As a former PTA president in the sought-after Brooklyn public school that my three children attended, I read with interest "Fed Up With Fund-Raising for My Kids' School," by Alane Salierno Mason (Op-Ed, nytimes.com, Oct. 11).
For my first meeting of the school year, I remember a huge banner in the elementary school auditorium that read "Beyond the Bake Sale." The message was clear: the PTA was poised to become a fund-raising machine, with one major caveat. We made a policy decision not to raise money for those services the city, state or federal government should provide. This included teachers' salaries. We did not want to let the government off the hook for its responsibility in financing public education.
As Ms. Mason noted, some schools are fortunate to have a dedicated cadre of fund-raising talent, parents with both disposable income and time, but what about other public schools? This really tips the equity scales, and the mission of public education is equity and access.
I am just so happy my kids are now in their 20s.
