To the Editor:

I read "Experience as It Once Was," by Roger Cohen (column, Oct. 11), in a paper edition of The Times that I bought at the gas station, while sitting at my usual spot at the counter at Rolando's Diner on Court Street, eating my usual Swiss cheese on toast served by my usual waitress, Michelle, and discussing the coming weekend weather with Patti, one of the owners. It was an actual experience, just as it is every day.

Not to try to stand on "real America" moral high ground, but it is possible to have slow, genuine, undiluted experiences right here in the United States, as well as in bucolic corners of the former East Germany. Come on up to Binghamton, Mr. Cohen, and we'll buy you a sandwich!
